The best time to buy and sell music gear in the UK

When second-hand music gear sells fastest, when it's cheapest, and how to time a sale. Updated October 2026.

The short answer: sell in autumn, when buyers are starting lessons, new terms and Christmas shopping. Buy in January and the summer, when more gear is listed and fewer people are looking.

Through the year

WhenWhat happensGood time to

These are tendencies, not rules. Popular models at the right price sell in any month; the season moves the slow sellers.

Gear that sells all year

Some gear has a buyer queue in every month: beginner DJ controllers like the DDJ-FLX4, the Scarlett 2i2, the Boss Katana and the Yamaha P-45. Don't hold these for a better month.

Timing a purchase

In January and the summer you'll see more listings and more sellers open to offers. Check what the model really sells for first: the price guide has used ranges, and this guide shows how to judge a listing.
